The Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) is a standardized government test administered to armed service personnel to determine one’s natural ability to learn a foreign language.
The test is comprised of gibberish and specific grammatical rules that apply to each section of the test. A perfect score is nearly impossible due to the nature of the test, a mere passing score is challenging, and a failing score guarantees only one more chance to take the test!

Don't let anybody tell you that you CAN'T study for the DLAB. This guide is EXACTLY like the DLAB test. I don't think I would have scored as high on the DLAB if I hadn't used guide the night before. The only part that didn't work for me was the picture portion at the end. The formatting didn't work appropriately. Maybe that's why I found that portion on the actual DLAB to be REALLY hard!Product details

Although this prepares the customer for the DLAB, Some of the rules and information are out of date. There is a $10.00 training manual that is more up to date and does just as good of a job, if not better, at explaining all of the sections of the test. I do not think this was worth the amount of money I spent on it. I would maybe pay $8-10 for the practice material, but that is it, and only if it were updated.
Don't waste your money on this super short study guide. Yeah, it tells you the rules the test goes off of, but these rules are easily accessible through Google. Also, there is no practice test at the end, and only practice exercises for each section. The exercises are short and few and I don't feel like this adequately prepared me at all for the DLAB.
Now, I have to go purchase another study guide that actually delivers on its promise. Thanks 😡
Provided great intel to help prepare for an exam that is otherwise challenging and without study guides.
Do not buy this guide. The Official DLAB Training Guide is all you need. I bought both hoping it would be helpful, but you really only need the one guide. More was not better! This one is outdated for one of the sections, so I really just stopped studying it once I realized that. The additional $5 price on the other guide is worth it. I scored a 124 on the DLAB yesterday from studying the other guide.
I purchased both this and the "Official DLAB Training Manual", and I found the latter to be more useful in addition to being a third of the price.
This manual has an outdated wording of the DLAB rules for certain sections, which I found confusing while studying.
Also, although it has more visual practice questions than the "DLAB training manual" the formatting of the text and pictures on my ipad was horrendous and made it difficult to view the pictures. I'm not sure if it's the kindle app conversion for ipad or the content itself, but be prepared.
If I had to do it over again, I would still buy the guide because I wanted as many practice questions as possible before taking the exam and they are hard to find for free online.
That being said, if you're going to buy one guide, get the DLAB Training Manual instead - it offers the same type of content with up to date rules.
I ended up getting a 133 while studying with both, and I am pleased with the result.
I bought this book after I missed the passing score for a cryptologic linguist position by 1 point. This book does a good job of explaining the rules of the DLAB along with tips and feedback from others who took the test. I took the DLAB after going through this book and I passed. My total score improved by 17 points. The only down side of this book form is that there is no audio practice or links to audio practice within the book, since the test is almost completely audio.
This study guide has some helpful examples, but the editing is very poor. The visual examples in the visual section are so tiny they made me and my study partner lol because we could barely see them. A couple we couldn't make out at all. Also, in the very end of the book where the answers are, the section answer sets are in the right order, but their numerical category designations are out of order. As in it says section 2 over section 1's answers, section 5 over section 2's, section 6 over section 4's answers, section 4 over section 6's. The other 2 DLAB study guides, by Cunnings and Patton are very good and have example tests that have helped me a lot. This one doesn't have a complete practice test.
